This is a very humble game involving a single button and two LED lights. There are no graphics or story of any kind. It's a simple game of reflexes and button-mashing. I've been quite busy with my latest Flash game and decided that it would be appropriate to post it here. Namely that it is in a functional state and includes most of the core mechanics. The rest is polish.

With each game I make, I'm trying to categorize it a special way. The last one was a simulation. This one uses that "paper cut out" theme to make it seem like you're sitting at a poor person's version of a theatre and watching a crappy puppet show.

I'm hoping to get the game released by next week.

This is a wall clock concept designed to express the connections between the place/time where you are now, and alternate places/times that you have relationships with. It is based on a simple single unit.

I, for instance, recently moved to Brooklyn, NY. However, in many ways my heart remains in the San Francisco bay area. Three time zones away. The angle that New York and San Francisco make with respect to the Earth's core, is 45 degrees. So my home might contain two clocks, that show me the time of the multiple geographies of my identity.

A business might use this system to indicate all the places that they have offices globally. If for instance, my studio wanted to indicate all the places of birth of all our members - where many of our families remain, it would look like this...

Respresented: Hawaii, the contiguous United States, Poland, Turkey, Iran, India, and China.

...

Nearly one year ago, from a clock we departed and with a clock we return. It's good to be back at Kickface again.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't aware that the rebrand was supposed to be a reimagining of a corporation's products/services. So I simply revamped a logotype for the Toyota Prius. While I am quite fond of the Prius, there are some visual issues that could be improved. The new logo is intended to communicate the duality of the old and new in the car's technology. Serif with Sans serif. All in a dynamic diagonal slash. The original logotype is included below.

I tried out a few different variations on this one, but the final is much like my original conception. I'm actually quite happy with the way it turned out, though that's not to say some details could be revisited and rendered more scribbly.

I hope everyone has a happy National Build Your Own Furniture Day!

You should have seen the original idea I was going to run with. It was basically going to be the Ikea logo and that phrase: National Build Your Own Furniture Day. The End. Fin. How boring that would have been!

I've always had a fondness for the D.I.Y. kind of work ethic when it comes to creating furniture and whatnot. It's like doing those models you did as a kid, but on a larger, functional scale... and there's all these pieces left over!

This was done in CorelDraw12 and prepared in Photoshop 7.0. I've included a really concise tutorial on how I did this little ditty. The key point here is that you absolutely need the right lighting in order for "color range" to work correctly, otherwise you will have a terrible image to work with.

I've been thinking about this assignment ALOT, and yet I haven't been particularly happy with any of the solutions that I've generated. It's getting me little neurotic. Here are some sketches of my ideas rendered in Adobe Illustrator (and yes, I am tempted to redo one of my previous kickfaces for this purpose - boo-urns, I know). Whichever one I end up settling on, I would probably want to end up painting and texturizing my final choice in Photoshop. Alas, my time is running down and I need to just pick one and keep refining it. Which one do you like best?

south park. this is where i work in san francisco. a little park south of market, in between a freeway and warehouse lofts. it's a piece of green in an industrial zone. i often wondered how it got here. i heard that in the 80s, south park was where the garment factories were. a hundred years ago, it was supposed to have been a rich real estate until the wealthy moved north to the hills near pacific heights. when they left, the park was abandoned. during the dot-com boom, internet starts ups worked here. when it busted, they moved out. now it's full of architects.

at center, to the left of the playground, all the way down there is a yellow coffee shop - butler and the chef - that makes a vanilla latte that i'm addicted to. i work across the park, in one of those buildings to the right in the distance. ground floor, all the way in the back. there's a guy who walks a dozen big dogs every afternoon while carrying a baby. i smile when i see him. there's also a garage full of old treasures - a sports car (the kind that james dead drove), fake palm trees, old movie cameras, regal furniture - that is strictly not for sale. i grab my bagels by the green building to the right. at night, it's all dark and foggy, and the street lamps look like hazy lazy angels, a bit too tired to get off the ground.

Those yellow moon like objects can either be moons or potato chips/crisps. You know, the chopped up bodies of his fallen brothers and sisters. He sure is awfully happy about that.

Near my work, there's a great little red brick warehousse that has a lot of character to it. It's small and dingy and houses Asian food products of some kind, perhaps to transport to Oakland Chinatown. This photoshop coloring was done on top of a scanned ink sketch. Color that simulates luminiscence is tough. Right now, the sunset light on the hills looks like fire. And I haven't done enough shading in general.

It appears that Mr. Shen and I chose the same tactic: employing models.

Inspired by Calder’s Circus, I fashioned some people out of chicken wire and fully intended to dress them like their progenitors. Yet, I was just so taken with their simple lines that I didn’t want to cover them up. Unfortunately, the grace that I found in the figures doesn’t quite translate to the photograph that I ended up producing.

Still, I quite enjoyed working spatially with wire, and I intend to try it more in the future.

This is the game of Transit System. The objective of the game is for each player to engineer path to arrive at the central green goal before everybody else. Four players. For every game the green goal tile is always placed in the middle and the blue points tiles are always placed at the middle of the sides. However, every other piece is shuffled and placed randomly so that the board is different every game. Each player starts off at the edge of the board at the blue point tiles. During each player's turn the player automatically accumulates one point, moves their piece across one tile to the edge of the following tile, then may play their point to rotate their following adjacent tile by 90 degrees in either direction. They may also choose to save their point and not rotate the tile. If players have saved up three points, they may play them to rotate any tile on the board (other than the goal) by 90 degrees. The goal tile may be rotated with the use of four points. Every time a player moves across a blue point tile, an additional point is accumulated. Players may not reverse and move their piece back the way they came except when their are about to collide with another player or their path has led them to a dead end. Players may never immediately reverse back across a blue point tile.

Or perch on our shoulder, holding themselves up to our ear. They even lead us around when we ask it for directions. Sadly, they are inevitably dumped by their owners for newer models, and left to fend for themselves in the world. Ownerless swarms of cell phones now present a huge vermin problem in major cities. Computer viruses carried in their population eventually lead to the first great digital plague.

Let’s play guessing games. The riddle section was always the least interesting part of Sunday Comics but I always kept reading them when I was little. I guess this is my attempt to make graphic design-y riddles.

In hindsight, wish I made them a little more interactive, like, left more visual clues, etc…

Three business cards – tried to use the same programs and process (autocad for illustrations + photoshop for colors) for three different styles.

So, here are the three business cards that I designed. I wanted to pretend that the particular housing company would make business cards that look the same... but different.

Jerry would get a card too, but he'll be so rich that he can permanently hire someone to hold a sign that has his information on it.

Bruce's card is intended to be a piece of architecture in itself. It must be folded into its configuration. I admit that this is highly impractical on many levels.
This graphic identity is to be printed on a Styrofoam cup. Run of one.

heyo, so i miss forests, miss the outdoors, so i made this digital forest in CAD, with a basic tree block and a lot of copy / pasting to create foliage, etc...

I was going to do something with Mayim Bialik, but decided against it.

This is a vector piece. If you look within each center of the flower, you'll see more flowers. It goes on for two or three iterations. Truly blossoming potential... or something like that.

i wanted to draw people, so i thought, why not, draw people in hats, sunglasses, and goatees? this is kind of like how a crowd of hong kong hipsters looks like...

This is supposed to be a sort of simulated class photo. Unfortunately, it is not at nearly the scale at which I wanted it to be. My original vision was to fill the page with quadruple the number of rows of people (as though they were standing on an outrageously tall scaffolding. However, due to time (not to mention talent) constraints, I was not able to accomplish this. I would like to eventually complete this. And potentially, in the future, I'd like to do a more detailed illustrated version.

The topic for "mass" is better translated a dense illustration/picture. So I basically figured what was more dense than the population of sea creatures?

They're all hand drawn, different (from slightly to much so) and probably non-existent.
